Overview
A cramped master shower and an underused jack-and-jill bathroom got a full refresh built around real family life. We enlarged the master shower, modernized the cabinetry, and repaired hidden subfloor damage before it became a bigger problem. In the jack-and-jill, swinging doors became space-saving pocket doors, and a deep soaking tub turned bath time into their kid's favorite part of the day.
The result: a spa-like master retreat and a family bathroom built for how they actually live.
The Challenge
This homeowner came to JEM Construction with two bathrooms that just weren't keeping up with their family's needs. The master bathroom's shower felt cramped and outdated, and the cabinetry no longer matched the style they wanted for their home. Down the hall, the jack-and-jill bathroom used by their kid had standard swinging doors that ate up space and a shallow tub that didn't do much for bath time — especially with a young daughter who loved to play in the water.
The Approach
We started in the master bathroom by reworking the layout to significantly increase the size of the shower, giving it a more open, spacious feel, and modernized the cabinetry throughout. During demolition, we discovered a portion of the subfloor beneath the old shower had rotted — a problem that could have caused bigger issues down the road. We repaired it properly before moving forward, and relocated the bathroom vents into the toe-kick for a cleaner, more streamlined look.
In the jack-and-jill bathroom, we replaced the old swinging doors with space-saving pocket doors and installed a deep soaking tub — a small change that made a big difference for a family with a young kid.
This homeowner also wanted to be part of the process. They chose and ordered their own cabinets and assembled them personally, and our team handled the installation. Throughout the project, we protected all existing flooring, kept dust containment a priority, and stayed flexible to accommodate the family's preferences every step of the way.
The Result
The transformation speaks for itself. The homeowner is thrilled with the new shower size and layout in the master bath, and the deep tub in the jack-and-jill has become a favorite spot for their daughter's bath time.
